Action continues on Sunday 1 August at Nyayo as the race for Super Cup slots heats up.
In an entertaining encounter played at the Nyayo National Stadium court, Strathmore University were the better side in their clash against Buccaneers, picking a 23-16 win to extend their lead at the helm of the Kenya Handball Federation (KHF) men's league to eight wins.
The varsity side had a four goal advantage at the half time break, a difference they fell shot of doubling by one goal at the final whistle.
Brian Murangiri top scored for the Peter Mwathi-coached side with four goals, Nicholas Munyua and Douglas Okwaro adding four a piece in their win. Buccaneers' Bethwel Kiprop was the overall top scorer at six goals while Stower Radzi made five for side.
"It was not our best day on the court. They beat us on fast breaks and forced us into avoidable turnovers on open play. Our ball handling and attack was not the best today, we did not maximise on our chances. Both goalkeepers did a good job but in the end the scoreline did not favour us," said Buccaneers captain Franicks Njoroge adding that they will bounce from this loss and work on completing the regular league season in the top six for a chance to feature in the Super Cup.
"The match was manageable and for the first time since the league began we played the defense we are known for. Our conversation rate was not the best and we will keep working to make it better. We had four of our five penalties saved too. We will keep working on these weaknesses while targeting one win at a time as we look to win the league title," said Strathmore's Maxwell Munene.
Meanwhile, Gerald Juma-coached Rangers HC extended their unbeaten run to four matches as they made easy work of Generation in a 45-27 outcome before playing for a laboured 33-30 victory over Boomarang.
Former men's league champions National Cereals and Produce Board (NCPB) had an easy time beating Thika 40-18.
In the women's league Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) fell to Rangers Women 27-21while holders Water Queens had a field day against the Kimilili-based debutants Rangers picking a 55-19 victory.
